Traffic stops lead to felony charges

Note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, no press releases were received by local media from city police for the past two weeks. Therefore, we have combined several into this story.

SAMMIE JENKINS

JENKINS

A 35-year-old Atmore man was arrested September 29 on felony drug possession charges after Atmore police officers responded to a 911 call reporting that an armed disturbance was ongoing at a Maxwell Street address.

The police response was logged as 7:00 p.m., and shortly therafter an officer “observed a

vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed.” The vehicle was blue-lighted, and police questioned the driver, later identified as Sammie Jenkins.

According to police reports, the city cop “detected a strong odor of marijuana coming

from the vehicle. A probable-cause search led to discovery of “nearly two dozen grams of synthetic

cannabis (Spice), a small amount of marijuana, and items used to ingest narcotics.”

Jenkins was arrested and processed into the Escambia County Detention Center (ECDC) on one count each of possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

SCOTTIE McNEAL

McNEAL

McNeal, 28, of Atmore was arrested October 1 after a traffic stop revealed he was the subject of several outstanding felony arrest warrants obtained by Brewton police.

Reports show that an unspecified equipment violation led to the 11:40 p.m. pullover, which took place on Woods Road.

Police said the driver, later identified as McNeal, originally provided a false name, “as he knew he had several outstanding felony warrants with the Brewton Police Department.” An APD officer was eventually to get a positive identification, and McNeal was charged by local police with obstructing justice by using a false name, a Class C felony.

JEREMIAH JAMES/NIKKI PRESLEY

PRESLEY
JAMES

A 37-year-old Atmore man and a 25-year-old Atmore woman were arrested October 3 on felony drug possession charges after the vehicle in which they were traveling was blue-lighted because it was being operated without lights.

Police reports show the incident happened around 7:50 p.m. an Atmore Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on Alabama 21 due to the vehicle “failing to use the head lights.”

The driver, Jeremiah James, and the passenger, Nikki Presley, were taken into custody after a K9 unit was called to the scene and signaled the presence of some illicit substance. A search of the vehicle yielded “a small amount of synthetic cannabis (Spice), a small amount of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana, and items used to ingest narcotics.”

James was booked into the ECDC on two counts of possession of a controlled substance, first-degree possession of marijuana (due to a previous second-degree conviction) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Presley was processed into the jail on one count each of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
