Convicted sex offenders denied parole

Two state inmates — both convicted here of various sex offenses and other crimes — were denied parole during July 29 hearings by the Alabama Board of Pardons & Paroles.

Jedd Jackson Grimes, formerly of Atmore, is a career criminal who is serving his fourth stint in state prison since 2012. Stacey Oneal Johnson, whose pre-prison city of residence is not known, is behind state bars for the first time, and still has more than seven years left on his sentence.

Grimes is serving a 120-month (10 years) sentence for his 2022 conviction on charges of violating provisions of the state’s Public Health and Morals statutes and Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

He was convicted in 2015 and served a 3-year sentence for second-degree receiving stolen property and violating Public Health and Morality statutes in a case where his victim was under the age of 12.

He had only been out of prison a short time from his 2012 conviction for first-degree marijuana possession, second-degree receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. He served all but a few days of a 3-year stint.

That conviction followed his 2010 conviction on charges of first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. He served a 1 year, 3 months sentence and had been released from prison only a few weeks when he was arrested and eventually sent back.

He is housed at Fountain Correctional Facility, where he has served just over 4 years. His minimum release date, without parole or pardon, is June 28, 2028.

Johnson gained a bit of notoriety when he tried to escape into Florida after being charged with second-degree sodomy and a SORNA violation. A multi-agency posse finally brought him in just west of Flomaton.

He was eventually convicted and sentenced to serve 20 years in prison on the sodomy charge, with a 10-year SORNA sentence running concurrently with the other.

Johnson remained in the Escambia County Detention Center for more than 3 years (1,260 days) while awaiting trial and transfer to state authorities, giving him almost 13 years of in-custody credit.

Housed at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, his minimum release date without parole or pardon is October 14, 2032.
