Escambia Academy’s Cougars, now 2-0 in their first year of 8-man football, will travel to Lanett this week to play Springwood’s Wildcats. (All 10 of the Cougars’ games are region affairs.)
EA has scored 114 points in the fast-paced, high-scoring AISA division, including a 74-point outburst last week.
Escambia County Coach Tommie Lewis Jr. got his first high-school coaching win last week, but the Blue Devils will take on the state’s number-one Class 4A team, Jackson, in Jackson, this week.
That starts a four-week run against the best the region has to offer.
After Jackson, ECHS (1-1) plays, in succession, Mobile Christian (which got votes in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association poll), St. Michael Catholic (No. 2 in the state), Orange Beach and W.S. Neal, one of the toughest stretches for any 4A team.
In Class 3A, Flomaton (2-0) remained on the fringe of the Top 10, while T.R. Miller (also 2-0) came in at No. 5. The Hurricanes host Excel this week; the Tigers travel to play Monroe County.
In Class 2A, J.U. Blacksher remained just outside the Top 10 after a 2-0 start. The Bulldogs, who have been fueled by a bruising ground game and a strong defense, host Chickasaw this week.
