The promotions of Chuck Brooks to Public Safety Director and Kenny Sessions to police chief drew the most attention during the Tuesday, October 14, Atmore City Council meeting.
But council members also passed a budget for the next fiscal year, one that includes a 5-percent pay increase for each of the city’s employees, approved several requests to use city parks and reappointed a member of a city board.
City Clerk Becca Smith said the $16.2 million spending package represented a slight increase in each department’s spending. It includes planned lease-purchase agreements to obtain a knuckle boom for the streets and sanitation department and a used firetruck to replace a unit that is in constant need of repairs.
In other business conducted during Tuesday’s meeting, the council:
*Approved a request by Standing in the Gap Ministry to use Houston Avery Park next April 26, for a Love in the Park event. No other details were provided.
*Approved a request from Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce to close Ridgeley Street for the October 30 Trick or Treat on the Street event. The Halloween-themed gathering annually brings hundreds of children and parents to the downtown area, where businesses provide candy and other items.
*Reappointed Ruby Nell White to another four-year term on the Library Board.
*Approved a request by Leslie Gonzalez to use Boxcar Willie Park from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on November 15 for her grandson’s birthday party.
