No official details have yet been made available, but an Atmore Free Press follower reported around 5 p.m. today (Wed., Oct 1) that a badly decomposed body, possibly that of a male, was removed from a ditch along U.S. 31.
The follower reported that a body “in a white body bag” was carried to a coroner’s van at the site, about 6.5 miles west of the BrakeTime store (formerly Hickey’s), between Bay Minette and Atmore.
A photo taken around 3 p.m. shows more than 10 emergency vehicles on the scene, most of them law enforcement vehicles, and reports are that more arrived after the photo was sent.
Earlier, police action seemed to be focused on the highway’s southside ditch. Unconfirmed reports are that a Baldwin County road crew discovered the body in the ditch while performing their tasks.
WKRG-TV reported that Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe the body is that of a male but are withholding confirmation until state crime lab pathologists conduct an autopsy.
