An Atmore man suffered serious injuries when he apparently fell asleep while driving and crashed into another vehicle on Pine Barren Road in Escambia County, Fla. around 8 a.m. today (Thursday, Aug 7).

According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, which do not include the names of drivers or others involved in crashes, the Atmore man’s Hyundai sedan was traveling northward on Pine Barren, while a Toyota SUV driven by a 30-year-old Century, Fla. woman, was traveling southward on the same road, about 300 feet from Pine Barren’s intersection with Hooks Road.

FHP reports indicate the man was “fatigued and fell asleep,” causing his vehicle to hit the front of the Toyota.

Highway patrolmen reported he was seriously injured and was flown by air ambulance to an area trauma center.

No other details were provided.
