Escambia Academy’s red-hot Cougars will be looking for their fifth straight win when they travel Friday to play Coosa Valley Academy in Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) 8-man football action.
The state’s only poll for the AISA’s 8-man competition lists 4-0 EA as the state’s top team. The Cougars have scored more than 200 points in their four wins, and a stingy defense has made the points stand up in the high-scoring division.
Escambia County High (ECHS), now 1-3, again takes on one of Region 1’s – and the state’s – top 4A teams. St. Michael trails only Jackson, which ECHS played two weeks ago, in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) poll. The Blue Devils lost last week by a 29-18 margin to Mobile Christian, which moved into the Top 10 this week.
In Class 3A, Flomaton’s Hurricanes fell out of the Top 10 after last week’s loss to T.R. Miller, which moved up to No. 3 in the state poll. Flomaton will take on Bayside Academy, which replaced the Hurricanes at No. 10 in the ASWA poll, at home on Friday, while the Tigers will play at Hillcrest-Evergreen.
J.U. Blacksher, which was idle last week, held onto its No. 10 ranking in Class 2A. The Bulldogs play at Clarke County this week, looking for their fourth successive win. Clarke County is 2-2.
Just across the state line, congratulations to Doug Vickery, who got his first Northview coaching win last week. The Chiefs, who have improved each week as the season has progressed, play Holmes County (Fla.) at home this week.
